Débora Marquès

Councillor for Culture and Sustainability of the City Hall of Sant Lluís

It is the island’s first cultural venue to be awarded the committent to sustainability designation. The Albert Camus Hall in Sant Lluís is a true Menorcan cultural reference, an ideal space for the celebration of culture: theatre, cinema, music, conferences, courses and a wide variety of activities organised within the framework of sustainable culture.

The Hall takes the name of Nobel Prize recipient Albert Camus. The author’s maternal grandmother, Catalina Cardona, was a native of Sant Lluís. Located in the heart of the town, it was built on the site where the “Teatro Nuevo” once stood, inaugurated in 1910. It was later acquired by the City Hall, who conserved the cultural use for the new building constructed in 2014.

The Albert Camus Hall is a multi-purpose and versatile centre with a variety of spaces. It hosts between 15 and 30 performances per season and is open both to emerging artistic companies as well as established professionals. It is the pride of Sant Lluís, and is hence also the site where noteworthy town events are held. A living cultural venue that is aware of the necessary balance between the environment and human activity.

“We understand culture as an essential tool for making sustainability a core concept in cross-cutting activities, and thus we believe it is necessary that venues where culture is created and disseminated must also be recognised with this distinction, which is equally recognisable and demanding.”

DÉBORA MARQUÈS, COUNCILLOR FOR CULTURE AND SUSTAINABILITY OF THE CITY HALL OF SANT LLUÍS
