In the noble city of Ciutadella, located in an underground chamber of the Cas Comte palace, is this cosy shop dedicated to the sale of typical Menorcan foodstuffs. The building, erected in 1839, is also known as the Torre-Saura palace and is considered the island’s best example of neoclassical civil architecture.
In such, the shop itself forms a small part of Menorcan history, and inside it keeps its gastronomic culture quite alive. Its marès sandstone vault and the shelves replete with Menorcan products are clear reminders of the island’s lengthy artisanal history. It is no coincidence that the foodstuffs available at Es Celleret de Cas Comte are still today produced with respect for the many processes used by past generations of all the families of the producers represented at this small shop: cheese, sobrassada, wine, olive oil, gin, salt, preserves, honey… Small operations selected for their exquisite products.
Not to be overlooked are the handmade sweets from Sa Sucreria, the company that runs the shop. Carquinyols, pastissets, crespells, duquesites or their famous ensaimades… They continue a legacy that since 1875, and with five generations of master artisans, has been a guarantee of top Menorcan confectionery. Certainly not to be missed on your visit to Ciutadella.
“At Es Celleret, we introduce our customers to part of our culture and many of the producers that keep it alive.”
