MEET THE CENTRAL FIGURES
Catalina Allès Pons
Owner of Lluriach
Nina and Joan belong to the fifth generation of farmers in Lluriach, one of the oldest farms of the island. Their family already worked these lands when wheat was the most cultivated crop in Menorca. With the transformation of the crops and the transition towards dairy cattle farming came cheese production, which for generations has been made artisanally on this farm, with milk obtained exclusively from its cows.
Lluriach cheese has the Mahón-Menorca Protected Designation of Origin, although it was marketed long before this denomination existed, when Joan’s grandfather went to Mallorca to sell his “Menorcan cheese”. The farm and the kind of livestock that is practiced there are one of the exponents of the traditional landscape composition of the island, ensuring habitat and biodiversity conservation. And their artisanal cheese-making technique, the “formatjar”, keeps one of Menorca’s immaterial cultural assets alive.
“It is the cheese that has always been made in Menorca. Artisanal, handmade and according to tradition. It is part of the island’s culture.”
CATALINA ALLÈS PONS, OWNER OF LLURIACH
